Private rooms are standard in all three areas of the Family Birth Center. All rooms have plenty of bright natural light, interior design utilizing local designers and artists, a private bathroom with a shower, and ample room for both family and care providers. Birth Center rooms also have hot tubs for you to use for comfort during your labor. Each room also has a built in sleep sofa for your partner to use during your stay.

The Family Birth Center offers a special room service style menu for you to enjoy during your stay.  Patients can order a variety of meals at times most convenient to them rather than eating meals at set mealtimes. Orders can be placed directly from the room and will be delivered room-service style to the patient’s room.  Family members can also order off of the same menu for a small fee. Snacks are also available on the unit for patients and family members. Although Maine Medical Center observes Quiet Hours from 8pm-6am, there are no set visiting hours at the Family Birth Center. Partners may visit at any time of the day and may stay overnight on the built in sleep sofa. Visitors may visit the new parents and baby anytime as guided by the family. For the wellbeing of mothers and newborns, anyone who is sick or has signs of infection may not visit, especially children. All visitors should wash their hands carefully before touching your new baby.

For your comfort and use, a mini refrigerator can be found in your room to store personal snacks and beverages. If you are pumping and storing breast milk for your baby, your nurse can show you how and where to store your breast milk in the newborn nursery area.

Cell phones can be used in most of the FBC areas as long as telemetry is not being used. For patient safety and to maintain a quiet, healing environment, please speak quietly and keep at least a three foot distance from medical equipment. If you do not bring a cell phone with you to the hospital, you may want to buy a phone card for long distance calls to friends and family.

Maine Medical Center offers free wireless internet access. You are welcome to bring in your personal laptop computer to use during your stay. You will need to ask your nurse for directions on how to access Maine Medical Center’s wireless internet network. There are also computers with internet access, televisions, video games, magazines and books located in the family waiting rooms on each floor.
