Going Home

Length of Stay
The usual length of stay is two days after a vaginal delivery and three days after a Cesarean section. If there is a medical need, some insurance companies will allow an extra day depending on your policy. Check with your insurance company before your admission/delivery to ask what your policy covers.

Discharge Teaching
Teaching to prepare you for going home is done throughout your postpartum stay. Your partner and other people that will be helping to care for you and your baby postpartum are welcome to attend.  Over 40% of mothers say that the discharge class was the most helpful part of their hospital stay. Also, it’s a good idea to keep a list of questions for your nurse so that you’ll have time to get the information before your discharge time.

Discharge Time
Our discharge time is 10:00 AM. Please make plans for your ride home before you come to the hospital. We advise that you bring your infant car seat into the hospital as soon as you are transferred to the Mother Baby Unit so that the nursing staff can teach you how to correctly use it. You’ll want to bring extra receiving blankets with you to help correctly fit your baby in the car seat if needed.
